Origin of German: German is a pluricentric language with various standardized variants, namely German, Austrian German and Swiss German. These are rooted in the Germanic language family, with vocabulary influences from French, English, Latin and Greek. 
Regional differences: German dialects are mainly divided by regions, many of them unintelligible to speakers of Standard German. The differences can be found in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, and some of the dialects are widely considered to be separate languages rather than German dialects.

Native speakers: 95 million worldwide: Germany (69 million), Austria (7 million), Switzerland (5 million), United States of America (964k), France (748k).
Major dialects: High German, Bavarian-Austrian (Munich and Vienna), Middle German, Frisian (Netherlands, southern Germany, and Denmark), Alemannic (Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein, France, and Germany).
